Beauty and the Beast (1991) is a beautiful, fantasy love story. An Enchantress, who saw no love in a young French prince's arrogant heart, conjured up a powerful curse transforming the prince into a hideous beast along with his servants who have changed into living household items. The one way he could break the spell is to learn to love another and receive the other's love in return before the last petal, from the Enchantress's rose, falls. But who could ever learn to love a beast? An inventor from a nearby village, Maurice, becomes lost in the woods and seeks shelter in the Beast's castle. The enchanted household items welcome him, however, the Beast is enraged when he discovers Maurice and imprisons him for trespassing. His daughter Belle, a bookworm who dreams of life outside her village, after unwanted attention from the local hunter, Gaston, eventually, finds her father locked up in the castle, but the Beast catches her. Bravely, Belle offers herself in exchange for her father's life, giving her word to remain in the castle forever. The Beast agrees and releases Maurice. The Beast decides to give Belle a room in the castle instead of keeping her in the dungeon. At first, Belle views the Beast as nothing more than a monster and he views her as difficult and stubborn. Over some time, the two start to become friends. They have an elegant dinner and a ballroom dance. The household items are excited and optimistic that Belle may fall in love with the Beast and break the spell. The Beast lets Belle see her father through his magic mirror: Maurice is lost and sick. The Beast, having fallen in love with Belle, releases her to rescue her father. She finds him and hurries back to the village. A mob gathers to capture Maurice. Gaston offers to have Maurice spared if Belle agrees to marry him but she refuses. Belle shows the Beast to the villagers with the magic mirror and assures them that he's her friend. Out of jealousy and anger, Gaston declares to 'kill the Beast.' Gaston attacks the Beast. The Beast does not defend himself because he has given up hope of being able to see Belle again. Gaston stabs him in the back, then loses his footing and falls. Belle arrives at the castle. In tears, she whispers that she loves him. The spell is broken. The Beast, brought back to life, is reverted to his human form and the castle becomes beautiful again and the enchanted objects turn back into humans. And they lived happily ever after. |
