Heartwood Creek by Jim Shore

The enormous popularity of the award-winning artist Jim Shore is the result of a lifetime of dedication, inspiration and plain old hard work. And as with most successful people, some good fortune has played a part as well. As Jim puts it, "Art is something I've done all my life. It's what I've always loved and the only thing I ever wanted to do. But making a living as an artist isn't easy. There are thousands of very talented people out there that never get achance to show what they can do. I've been lucky. Not only do I get to do what I love, I get to share it with people around the world. I've been given a tremendous gift and I thank God for it every day."

Inspiration for Heartwood Creek stems back to the colonization of North America, where colonists brought with them a rich and varied history of Old World decorative techniques. They created beautiful and functional items for their new home. In essence, American folk art has its roots in this history and combination of forms and applied to various mediums. From German quilts to Scandinavian decorative paintings to English appliqué, the New World became a new stage for centuries of artistic tradition. And as these traditions developed, the artistry and design characterised the style and put its own stamp on these European traditions. The unmistakable "Heartcrafted" style of Jim Shore draws its inspiration from these traditions, creating authentic new interpretations of the shared cultural heritage and thus Heartwood Creek was born. As a testament of the success and hard work of Jim Shore, it is estimated that Jim has designed over 3,000 Santas in his career to date! The brand is now well recognised and the some of his older work has seen a surge of interest as reflected in the secondary market values.

Jim Shore provides a detailed drawing of a new piece to a group of master sculptors, handpicked and trained by Jim over the course of many years. Prototypes and proofs are sent to Jim for revision and approval, and usually after several amendments, molds are produced from these original sculptures for casting using cold-cast resin. Each piece is then painstakingly hand-painted and finished by artists using folk art techniques developed by Jim. Again, Jim approves all work to ensure they are faithful representations of the original art. The attention to detail and his involvement in the entire process ensure products retain the look and feel of real wood and have a quality and level of detail that is unique in the industry.
